EN 18286:2026 AI quality management system audit
The EU AI Act requires every provider of a high-risk AI system to run a quality management system that ensures compliance with the regulation. Until recently, there was no agreed standard showing what such a system should contain.
That changed in October 2026. EN 18286:2026 became the first harmonised standard under the AI Act, giving providers a clear and recognised route to meet the quality management requirements.

What is EN 18286:2026?
EN 18286:2026 Artificial intelligence – Quality management system for EU AI Act regulatory purposes was developed by CEN and CENELEC. Its reference was published in the Official Journal of the EU on 14 October 2026 by Commission Implementing Decision (EU) 2026/2274.
Providers that apply the standard benefit from a presumption of conformity with the Article 17 quality management requirements of the AI Act, Regulation (EU) 2024/1689, for the provisions the standard covers.
Unlike general management system standards, EN 18286 is built around the lifecycle of the AI system, not the organisation. It is designed to sit on top of ISO/IEC 42001, ISO 9001 or ISO 13485, so you can extend an existing system instead of running a separate one.
Who needs it?
EN 18286 is for providers that develop high-risk AI systems or place them on the EU market, for example AI used in:
- recruitment and staff management;
- creditworthiness assessment and insurance pricing;
- education and exam assessment;
- critical infrastructure;
- products such as medical devices and machinery, where AI is a safety component.
After the Digital Omnibus on AI (Regulation (EU) 2026/1744), high-risk obligations apply from 2 December 2027 for stand-alone systems (Annex III) and from 2 August 2028 for AI embedded in regulated products (Annex I). A quality management system takes time to build and prove, so the time to prepare is now.
What does the audit cover?
We audit your quality management system against EN 18286:2026, including:
- the strategy for regulatory compliance;
- design, development, testing and validation of AI systems;
- data management and data governance;
- the risk management system across the AI lifecycle;
- technical documentation and record-keeping;
- post-market monitoring and serious incident reporting;
- communication with authorities, notified bodies and customers;
- resources, competence and accountability.
How does it work?
- Scoping: the AI systems in scope, their risk classification and your existing management systems.
- Stage 1: review of documentation and readiness.
- Stage 2: on-site or remote audit with interviews and evidence sampling.
- Report: findings against each requirement of EN 18286:2026.
If you are already certified to ISO 9001, ISO 27001 or ISO/IEC 42001, the audit can be combined with your existing audits.
Why choose an EN 18286 audit?
By choosing an EN 18286:2026 audit, you will:
- have independent evidence that your quality management system follows the harmonised standard;
- prepare for conformity assessment and market surveillance before the deadlines;
- show customers and investors that your AI is developed and monitored responsibly;
- build on your existing ISO management systems instead of starting from zero;
- be among the first providers to apply the AI Act’s first harmonised standard.
