What is behind the RSPO trademark?

The Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil, or RSPO, is a non-profit organization that brings together stakeholders such as palm oil producers, processors, retailers, environmental and social non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to develop and implement global standards for sustainable palm oil.
There are more than 5,000 RSPO members worldwide, representing all stages of the palm oil supply chain. They are committed to producing, sourcing and/or using sustainable palm oil certified by the RSPO organization.
According to RSPO, 19% of palm oil worldwide is RSPO certified.

What is behind the RSPO trademark?

What distinguishes palm oil that has the RSPO mark from non-certified oil?

In order for a grower to be part of the RSPO supply chain and be RSPO certified, it must follow 7 principles:

  1. Must behave ethically and transparently
  2. Must operate legally and respect the law
  3. Productivity, efficiency, positive impact and resilience must be optimized
  4. Community and human rights must be respected
  5. The inclusion of small farms should be supported
  6. The rights of employees must be observed
  7. The ecosystem and environment must be protected, preserved and improved

This means that the RSPO program stands against deforestation, the expansion of plantations into peatlands, the ban on using fire. RSPO program is based on respect for labor and human rights, and ensuring workers are properly paid for their work.

RSPO standards and systems include third-party certification, accreditation of certification bodies, a transparent complaints mechanism, supply chain certification and traceability through the PalmTrace system.

Since the establishment of the RSPO program in 2011, use of the RSPO trademark has grown from 12 to 67 countries.*

BM Certification provides RSPO supply chain certification services under accreditation number ASI-ACC-098. Please contact us for more details.
