Sustainability and environmental impact assessment programs for buildings (such as BREEAM) are being developed and implemented around the World. Product life cycle assessment (LCA) is one of the cornerstones of building assessment. Therefore, there is a need for an independent and reliable tool (the third party verified) that allows for a comprehensive assessment of the environmental impact of construction materials. Such a tool is the Environmental Product Declaration (EPD), which is based on a product life cycle assessment.

Product life cycle assessment describes the impact of a particular process, material and its interactions on the environment at all stages of its life cycle. LCA is considered to be one of the most comprehensive methodologies for environmental impact assessment. The result of the LCA is a test and calculation-based overview of the product’s impact on different environmental categories at different stages of its life – from raw material extraction, production to end-of-life product management. The development of an LCA requires data on the raw materials used in production and the by-products or waste generated in the production process.

Our specialists offer the development of LCA in accordance with the standards ISO 14040: 2006 and ISO 14044: 2006, which includes the definition of purpose and scope, life cycle inventory, environmental impact assessment and interpretation of the results of all the above stages. Life cycle assessment is an iterative process and requires the active participation of the company in obtaining the life cycle data.

An EPD (Environmental Product Declaration) is a voluntary type III environmental declaration, in a uniform format, with comparable results and, where appropriate, the third party verified data provided to the consumer to demonstrate and explain the environmental impact of the product. It defines the criteria for comparing products according to EN 14025: 2006 and EN 15804: 2012 + A2: 2019.

The EPD uses LCA data. Currently, EPDs are voluntary, but as the requirements for building sustainability and the ability to compare the environmental impact of different building projects increase, consumer interest in the environmental impact of building materials, which can be used to calculate the environmental impact of a building, is growing.
