Most commonly-used food safety certification programs:

  • ISO 22000 is an international standard that outlines the requirements for a food safety management system. It is designed to help organizations in the food chain – including those involved in the production, processing, and transportation of food – to identify and control food safety hazards in order to ensure that the food they produce is safe for consumers. ISO 22000 is based on risk assessment and identification of critical control points (HACCP – Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points)
  • FSSC 22000 is a food safety standard that includes requirements for organizations throughout the food chain to implement and maintain a food safety management system. This standard is based on the requirements of the ISO 22000 standard. The FSSC 22000 certificate is recognized by the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI), which means that companies certified according to the FSSC 22000 standard can prove their compliance with international food safety standards.
  • BRCGS (British Retail Consortium Global Standards) is a global food safety and quality certification program. The BRCGS program is based on a set of internationally recognized food safety and quality standards that cover all stages of the food production and supply chain, from raw material procurement to final product delivery. The program provides organizations with a framework for implementing and maintaining good manufacturing practices (GMPs), good hygiene practices (GHPs), and good laboratory practices (GLPs).
  • IFS (International Featured Standards) is a food safety and quality standard used throughout the food industry. It is certified and implemented by retailers, food service providers and other organizations to assess and certify the food safety and quality practices of their suppliers. The IFS standard is divided into several different modules, each of which covers a specific aspect of food safety and quality. These modules include:
    • IFS Food: The core IFS standard, which covers all aspects of food safety and quality, including raw materials, production, packaging, and transportation.
    • IFS Logistics: A standard for assessing the food safety and quality practices of organizations involved in the transportation and storage of food products.
    • IFS Broker: A standard for assessing the food safety and quality practices of organizations that act as brokers or intermediaries in the food supply chain.
    • IFS PACsecure: A standard for assessing the food safety and quality practices of organizations involved in the packaging and labeling of food products.

Obtaining food safety certification can help businesses and organizations demonstrate their commitment to food safety and quality, and may also be required by certain customers or regulatory. In order to obtain food safety certification, companies and organizations must implement an appropriate quality system within the company. After the implementation of the system, an assessment by a third-party certification company must be carried out.

Having a food safety certification can also provide several benefits for businesses and organizations, including:

  • Improved food safety and quality: By following the standards and requirements of a food safety certification program, businesses and organizations can improve their food safety and quality practices, which can help prevent foodborne illness and other issues related to food safety.
  • Increased customer confidence: Customers are more likely to trust and choose businesses and organizations that have demonstrated their commitment to food safety through certification.
  • Enhanced reputation and credibility: Food safety certification can help businesses and organizations enhance their reputation and credibility in the marketplace.
  • Potential for increased sales and revenue: By demonstrating their commitment to food safety and quality, businesses and organizations with food safety certification may be able to attract more customers and increase their sales and revenue.

Food safety and quality certification is an important consideration for businesses and organizations that handle and produce food. By obtaining food safety certification, businesses and organizations can demonstrate their commitment to food safety and quality at all stages, and can also gather a number of benefits such as improved food safety practices, increased customer confidence, and potential for increased sales and revenue.
