PEFC Council has signed a contract with BM Certification to conduct PEFC RED II audits
BM Certification is proud to announce that in early February we signed a contract with the PEFC Council to conduct PEFC RED II audits. This gives us the right to carry out PEFC RED II audits, ensuring compliance with the Renewable Energy Directive (RED II). This significant achievement once again demonstrates BM Certification’s commitment to sustainability and high-quality certification services.

Understanding RED II and Recognized Voluntary Schemes
The Renewable Energy Directive (RED II) establishes sustainability criteria for bioenergy production and ensures that biomass used in the EU contributes to climate change mitigation. Certification bodies carrying out audits under RED II must be accredited to ISO 17065 and, from 2026 if actual GHG emissions calculations are carried out, also ISO 14065:2020. The accreditation process is overseen by national accreditation bodies of EU Member States, ensuring compliance with Regulation (EC) No 765/2008.
What sets BM Certification apart is that we are one step ahead in the industry. Last year we have already obtained accreditation for ISO 14065:2020, a standard that will become a mandatory requirement for certification bodies performing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions calculations from 2026.
To facilitate the implementation of RED II, the European Commission has recognized several voluntary and national certification schemes. These schemes verify the sustainability of biofuels, biomass, and related products, ensuring they meet RED II criteria. To date, 17 voluntary and national certification schemes have been formally recognized under RED II.
A list is available on the European Commission’s website: https://energy.ec.europa.eu/topics/renewable-energy/bioenergy/voluntary-schemes_en
BM Certification offers a wide range of certification services in compliance with RED II and other sustainability standards, including:
- International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC EU) – A globally recognized certification for sustainable biomass and biofuels.
- Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) – A global certification system promoting sustainable forest management.
- Sustainable Biomass Program (SBP) – A certification system for woody biomass used in energy production. (We offer this service in cooperation with SCS Global Services)
- Sustainable Resources (SURE) voluntary scheme – Ensuring compliance with RED II sustainability criteria.
And we are in the process of recognition under the Polish voluntary certification system KZR INiG system.
By obtaining ISO 14065:2020 accreditation ahead of the 2026 requirement, BM Certification guarantees that our clients will continue to receive high-quality certification services without disruption. Our proactive approach ensures compliance with evolving regulations and reinforces our position as a trusted certification body in the sustainability sector.
